IMDS Basic Concepts and Application


This instructor-led course is designed to ensure users are familiar with all aspects of the IMDS system with an emphasis on creating quality product substance compliance data. The goal is to get you working in IMDS as quickly and efficiently as possible. Students will learn how to build, receive, and submit data in response to customer requests. All basic concepts will be reviewed in detail providing students with confidence to function competently in the IMDS system.

Course Information

This instructor-led course is designed to ensure users are familiar with all aspects of the IMDS system with an emphasis on creating quality product substance compliance data.  The goal is to get you working in IMDS as quickly and efficiently as possible.  Students will learn how to build, receive, and submit data in response to customer requests.  All basic concepts will be reviewed in detail providing students with confidence to function competently in the IMDS system.

 

The training focuses on more than just how to run the IMDS interface and enter data.  It includes the skills and processes needed to obtain and submit accurate quality data.  The automated check routines of IMDS only go so far and are not designed to nor can they be relied on to ensure that your data is correct and accurate.  You are the final judge of data quality.  In this class you will learn the material basics and thought processes to apply in making judgments about data submitted by your suppliers.

 

In addition to presentations, the class includes exercises to practice the skills discussed in each section of the class before moving on to the next concepts.  Exercises will be done in the official DXC training system for IMDS.  As part of the course, each student will receive a personal training license ID that will remain valid for 4 weeks after completion of the training.

 

In addition to the training, an optional practicum will be available to all students.  This consists of exercises to be completed in the training system and turned in to the class instructor after completion of the basic training.  A follow-up group conference call to discuss the results of the practicum will be open to all students.


Additional Information for Live Virtual Students

Participants are required to use a device capable of streaming content through a video conferencing platform.  The participant agrees to always keep their camera active during the training.

IMDS Coordinator/Processor, Environmental Specialist, EHS, Quality, Engineering Dept, Data Manager/Processor, HR

When your training is complete you will:

•        Understand the goals of the International Material Data System

•        Understand your responsibility for providing accurate data

•        Be familiar with the terms and definitions of the IMDS

•        Be able to create, send, receive, and administer material data sheets (MDS)

•        Understand the requirements for reviewing data beyond the automated IMDS checks

•        Be able to communicate clearly to suppliers the requirements for data acceptance

•        Be familiar with search mechanisms

•        Know how to search for published materials

•        Understand how to integrate published data and data from suppliers into your MDSs

 

The curriculum will teach you all the steps in the IMDS process:

•        Data collection

•        Verification against product drawings

•        Material creation including sub-material usage

•        Semi-component creation

•    Introduction to IMDS

o           History and background 

o           Data flow, data visibility and security 

o           Relevant legal regulations overview

o           OEM requirements and acceptance criteria

o           IMDS recommendations

•    Definitions

o           Material data sheet (MDS) and modules

o           Basic substances list, GADSL, SVHC, and Conflict Minerals in the IMDS

o           Components, semi-components and materials

•    Creating and checking MDSs/Modules

o           Creating and entering your own data

o           Accepting/rejecting and integrating data received from suppliers

o           Using published data in your structures

o           Resolving errors and warnings

•    Processes

o           MDS actions: internal release, send, publish, propose, forward

o           Version control, copying (Copy-New Version or Copy-Copy), deleting

o           The Analysis function and how to use it

o           The Certificate of Expenditure function and how to use it

•     Administration

o           Registering your company in IMDS

o          Defining and updating contact persons

o          Changing your company profile
