Brazing | CQI-29

AIAG’s CQI-29 Special Process: Brazing System Assessment is a comprehensive audit standard for brazing processes in automotive production and service part organizations. Developed by the Brazing Work Group, the goal of the CQI is to validate the effectiveness of brazing processes throughout the entire supply chain. Specifically, it covers aluminum and stainless steel brazing and specifies process requirements related to part print, control plan, braze quality inspection, parameter documentation, and more.

Key Components of CQI-29

  • Management and Planning: Commitment from management, quality planning, and compliance with customer requirements.

  • Process Control and Documentation:r Detailed process flow diagrams, PFMEA, control plans, and comprehensive documentation.

  • Personnel and Training: Qualified, competent personnel and ongoing training programs.

  • Equipment and Materials: Proper maintenance, calibration, and verification of equipment; specification, storage, and handling of materials.

  • Inspection, Testing, and Continuous Improvement: Clear inspection procedures, appropriate testing methods, handling of nonconforming products, and continuous improvement plans.

Benefits of CQI-29

  • Enhanced Quality Control: Provides a framework for evaluating and improving brazing processes, leading to higher quality and consistency in products.

  • Increased Customer Confidence: Demonstrates commitment to quality, meeting customer requirements, and enhancing reputation with OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers.

  • Standardization and Best Practices: Promotes industry best practices and standardized procedures, reducing variability and improving production efficiency.

  • Regulatory and Compliance Benefits: Helps manufacturers comply with industry regulations and customer-specific requirements, minimizing non-compliance risks.

  • Continuous Improvement and Risk Mitigation: Identifies and addresses potential process risks, supports ongoing improvements, and reduces the likelihood of defects and costly recalls.

The CQI-29 process offers a structured approach for evaluating and enhancing brazing processes in the automotive industry, resulting in improved quality, efficiency, and customer satisfaction for parts manufacturers.
