Plating | CQI-11

The AIAG CQI-11 Special Process: Plating System Assessment (CQI-11), was developed to help evaluate the quality systems in place at plating shops supplying OEM automotive coatings such as zinc and zinc alloy electrodeposits, decorative plating applied to metal or plastic substrates, and hard chromium deposits, as well as electroless nickel and electropolishing processes. The latest update improved document clarity, and included the ISO 9001:2015 and IATF 16949:2016 Quality Management System concepts of “Process Approach” and “Risk Management.” This critical set of guidelines ensures consistent quality and reliability in heat-treated parts, helping parts manufacturers improve their processes, maintain high standards, and meet customer requirements.

Key Components of the AIAG CQI-11 Process:

  • Process Tables: Detailed tables that outline specific requirements and guidelines for various heat treatment processes.
  • Assessment Checklist: A comprehensive checklist for evaluating the effectiveness and compliance of heat treatment systems.
  • Process Control Methods: Defined methods for controlling and monitoring heat treatment processes to ensure consistency and quality.
  • Continuous Improvement: Emphasis on ongoing improvements through regular assessments and updates to processes and systems.
  • Documentation Requirements: Clear guidelines for maintaining accurate and detailed records of all heat treatment activities and assessments.

Benefits to Parts Manufacturers:

  • Improved Quality Control: Enhanced ability to monitor and maintain consistent quality in heat-treated parts.
  • Increased Customer Satisfaction: Meeting or exceeding customer expectations by adhering to stringent quality standards.
  • Reduced Defects: Lower incidence of defects and non-conformities in heat-treated components.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations, avoiding potential legal and financial repercussions.
  • Competitive Advantage: Gaining a competitive edge by demonstrating commitment to high-quality and reliable heat treatment processes.

Implementing the AIAG CQI-11 process enables parts manufacturers to enhance quality control, meet stringent industry standards, and gain a competitive edge through consistent, high-quality production.
