Coating | CQI-12

AIAG’s CQI-12 Special Process: Coating System Assessment, is a standard developed to provide a framework for evaluating and improving the quality and consistency of coating systems within the automotive supply chain. The standard aims to ensure that automotive parts and components that undergo various types of coating processes meet the stringent quality requirements of the industry.

The 3rd edition was developed to provide greater detail on pyrometry requirements, including instrumentation, thermocouple checks, and temperature uniformity surveys, where appropriate. An optional form builder function has also been added to the downloadable Excel file for each process table to allow the assessor to replicate the actual process flow of the plating line, step by step.

Key Components of CQI-12

  • Assessment Checklist and Process Audits: Comprehensive checklists and regular audits to evaluate and ensure compliance with coating standards.
  • Documentation and Control Plans: Detailed documentation of processes and control plans to maintain consistent quality and monitor the coating process.
  • Training and Competence: Ensuring personnel are adequately trained and competent in their roles through regular training programs.
  • Preventive Maintenance: Scheduled maintenance of coating equipment to prevent downtime and quality issues.
  • Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA) and Continuous Improvement: Structured approach to identifying and addressing non-conformities, with a focus on continuous process improvement.

Benefits of CQI-12

  • Improved Quality and Consistency: Enhanced coating process quality and reduced variability, leading to better end-product quality.
  • Customer Satisfaction: Higher customer satisfaction and loyalty due to meeting or exceeding industry standards.
  • Risk Mitigation: Reduced risks associated with coating defects and failures through a structured approach to identifying and addressing potential issues.
  • Compliance and Competitive Advantage: Compliance with automotive industry standards and differentiation from competitors by demonstrating a commitment to quality.
  • Cost Savings: Cost savings from improved process efficiency, reduced rework, scrap, and warranty claims.

By implementing the CQI-12 standard, automotive parts manufacturers can achieve higher levels of operational excellence, product quality, and customer satisfaction, ultimately leading to a stronger market position and enhanced business success.
